Before Scrooge Became Scrooge
Before the ghosts. Before the redemption. There was a boy named Ebenezer Scrooge.
Few characters in literature are as instantly recognizable as Ebenezer Scrooge. But who was he before he became the man we remember? That’s the question that inspired my Christmas novella, Ebenezer: The Untold Story of Ebenezer Scrooge.
The Story Dickens Left Untold
In A Christmas Carol, Dickens offers tantalizing glimpses of Scrooge’s past.
We see a lonely schoolboy, largely forgotten during the Christmas holidays. We meet his loving sister, Fan. We discover the kindness of his employer, Mr. Fezziwig, and witness the heartbreaking end of his relationship with Belle.
These moments tell us that Scrooge wasn’t always the coldhearted businessman we meet at the beginning of Dickens’s story.
But what happened between those moments?
A Journey Into Victorian England
How did childhood loneliness influence Ebenezer’s relationships? When did financial security become more important than happiness? What choices gradually closed his heart to the people who loved him?
Those questions inspired me to write Ebenezer: The Untold Story of Ebenezer Scrooge.
My novella imagines Scrooge’s life before the events of A Christmas Carol.
It explores the people who influenced him, the disappointments he endured, the opportunities he embraced, and the relationships he gradually sacrificed.
My goal wasn’t to excuse Scrooge’s behavior or replace Dickens’s extraordinary story.
It was to explore how someone becomes the person we eventually meet.
Because few people become bitter, isolated, or obsessed with wealth overnight.
Sometimes those transformations happen one disappointment, one decision, and one missed opportunity at a time.
A Familiar Character, a Different Perspective
If you’ve loved Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, I hope Ebenezer offers a new way to experience a familiar character.
You already know the man who refuses to celebrate Christmas, dismisses charity, and values money above almost everything else.
But what if you could follow the experiences that led him there?
What if you could meet the young Ebenezer before his heart hardened, when friendship, family, and love still offered him the possibility of a different future?
That’s the journey I invite readers to take in Ebenezer: The Untold Story of Ebenezer Scrooge.
It’s not a retelling of Dickens’s classic. It’s an imagined beginning to the story we already know.
You know how Scrooge’s story ends. Now discover where it might have begun.
