🐎 A Tradition at Saratoga — and the Story Behind Furlong Frank

🐎 A Tradition at Saratoga — and the Story Behind Furlong Frank

Every writer has a place that sparks something deeper than imagination — a place that becomes a touchstone for memory, friendship, and storytelling.

For me, that place is Saratoga Race Course.

Every year, I make a pilgrimage north with a group of old friends from high school and a growing circle of new friends we’ve gathered along the way. It’s a tradition built on laughter, long dinners, inside jokes that never quite make sense to outsiders, and the electric buzz of the track on race day.

There’s something about Saratoga that gets into your bloodstream — the smell of the stables in the morning, the thunder of hooves in the afternoon, and the quiet sense that you’re standing in a place where history is still being written.

It was only a matter of time before that world found its way into one of my stories.

That story became Furlong Frank.

From Friendship to Fiction

While the book is, at its heart, a Frank Rozzani mystery, it is also my love letter to Saratoga — to the friends who made the tradition meaningful and to the strange, beautiful energy of the place itself.

In the novel, Frank travels to Saratoga with his closest companions — a mix of longtime friends and chosen family — for what is supposed to be a relaxing getaway centered around the Travers Stakes.

Of course, in Frank’s world, relaxation never quite goes according to plan.

The friendships, the humor, and the warmth you’ll find in Furlong Frank are all rooted in those real-life trips — the conversations over drinks, the stories retold year after year, and the feeling that, for a few days each summer, time slows down just enough for you to remember what matters.

An Excerpt from Furlong Frank

Here’s a glimpse into the world of the novel — a moment that captures both the atmosphere of Saratoga and the sense of anticipation that builds toward the Travers:

It was a crisp June morning. The upstate New York air was so clean it might sting the lungs if you weren’t born to it, and at Saratoga Race Course the low sun slid under the grandstand canopy and painted the cinder track in fresh, eager gold. There were darker places in the world… but here the day always opened hopeful, even at the end of June, before the thunder of hooves turned the fields to trembling rumor.

Training began at dawn. By six the backside hummed, not with noise but purpose… Already horses circled the barns like detached live sculptures on a merry-go-round… each had the pride of knowing they were the first hands to touch greatness each morning.

The Saratoga Race Course was older than the hands who tended it, and wiser, too… What it traded in, above all, was continuity: the endless promise that every July, greatness might pass through again.

That sense of continuity, legacy, and possibility is the heartbeat of Saratoga — and the emotional foundation of this story.

Why This Book Matters to Me

Every book I write carries a piece of my life in it, but Furlong Frank carries something especially personal:

  • the friendships that have endured for decades
  • the new connections that came from keeping that tradition alive
  • the joy of returning to a place that never quite changes, even as we do

Frank Rozzani may be a fictional detective, but the camaraderie, the laughter, and the sense of belonging in this book are very real.

Looking Ahead

If you’ve ever had a place that brings you back to yourself — or a group of friends who feel like family — I think you’ll recognize something in Furlong Frank.

And if you’ve never been to Saratoga?

Well… you might just find yourself planning a trip.
